Roman persecution of Christianity
During the Roman persecution of Christianity for nearly two centuries, and of science in general for several more centuries, the few written documents that may have existed at the time about Christ Jesus' working and teaching were all burnt and otherwise destroyed quite early. In order to bypass the Roman inspired madness, John, living in exile during the persecution, appears to have created a story of the spirit of those times that is extensively wrapped in metaphor, in a manner that would not be seen as a threat to Rome, which therefore appears to have survived.
